A previously unreleased live recording of drum legend Art Blakey with a classic line-up of the Jazz Messengers. It was captured on January 14, 1961, at Hibiya Public Hall in Tokyo during the band's first-ever tour of Japan.
1964 was momentous for saxophonist Wayne Shorter, starting the year in Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers before making his own debut (Night Dreamer/JuJu). He joined the Miles Davis Quintet that summer, cementing a seminal lineup in jazz history.
Even though Duke Ellington and Coleman Hawkins had both been well-known jazzmen since the early 1920s, it wasn't until 1962 - at least 20 years after Duke first suggested it - that these two recorded their only session together.
