Here's a trivia question for the counter: name a Thelonious Monk sideman date where he's not the one running the show. Monk logged plenty over the years, backing Coleman Hawkins, Miles Davis and others, but this one's rarer still, Monk sitting in just for his own tunes, 'Misterioso' and 'Reflections,' alongside fellow pianist Horace Silver, who handles the rest of the date behind Sonny Rollins, J.J. Johnson, Paul Chambers and Art Blakey. Recorded in one day back in '57, and the Tone Poet series finally gives the Van Gelder tapes their due on vinyl.
